Gary L. Carrow Memorial ScholarshipGary L. Carrow, was a University High School graduate who was active in marching band and jazz lab. He went on to study chemical engineering and chemistry at Washington State University. In his freshman year at WSU, Gary returned to Spokane to attend a band competition and on his way back to Pullman was killed in automobile accident. Gary's friends and relatives established the Gary Carrow Memorial Scholarship in 1988 to commemorate his dedication to and enthsiasm for high school band. This scholarship assists graduating high school seniors active in the instrumental music program at University High School in Spokane, Washington. In addition to receiving a financial award, the recipient's name is engraved on a plaque that remains on display in the band room at University High School. Applicants must be graduating seniors of University High School who are active in the instrumental music program and band activities, including fundraising projects, if applicable. Applicants must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average or higher and demonstrate good citizenship in other school and community activities. Two letters of recommendation are required, as well as a recommendation from the University High School Band Director speaking to the applicant's ideals, band involvement, character and level of performance skill with musical instruments. Financial need is not a consideration for this scholarship.
